The Picaluna Story

Picaluna is a business that offers a better way for family and friends to say goodbye to the people they love, through funerals, memorials and authentic life celebrations. Whether you need help with outside funeral services, funeral wake venues, planning a memorial service program or scattering ashes ceremony, or non-traditional funeral services in the Greater Melbourne region, we are there to help.

We began with four passionate funeral celebrants that went on to train as funeral directors and form Picaluna Beautiful Funerals. From those humble beginnings, Picaluna has grown to where we are today, helping families across the greater Sydney region, Blue Mountains, lower Southern Highlands, Central Coast, Newcastle and Greater Melbourne.

Picaluna was launched in October 2016 with one important goal. We wanted to offer a better way for family and friends to say goodbye to the people they love.

It was the brainchild of four co-founders. Interestingly, none of us had been previously involved in the funeral industry. We came from different backgrounds, but saw a need to change the way funerals were being done. We each had poor experiences with funerals for family members in the past and felt that there must be a better way to do it.

We wanted the process to be simpler. More personal. More compassionate. And definitely more affordable. We saw an industry that lacked transparency and followed strictly regimented paths. Our idea was to democratise the entire process, allowing people to have more input at each stage. We knew that this would allow more personalised and authentic burials and cremations. It also allowed us to ensure funeral costs were affordable for everyone. We make a real effort to understand every family’s situation, working with them to deliver a beneficial outcome, within their budget.

Along the way, we also realised that the people who understood best how to create meaningful and healing funeral ceremonies were funeral celebrants. Over the past decades as Australian society has become increasingly secular, funeral celebrants have proven their worth in being the conduit to acknowledging and honouring the deceased through ceremony and ritual. It therefore made perfect sense to place our tailor-made funeral arranging software into the hands of those who were already comfortable in the funeral planning space.

Picaluna has had the privilege of guiding over one thousand families since 2016 in the end of life processes. Our extensive experience covers an extraordinary variety of options. Sometimes, it’s a simple direct cremation followed by a memorial service and wake. Others may choose a home vigil, church service, graveside gathering or burial. We can provide end of life consultancy and doula support with cooling bed, or organise a paddle-out with surfers and scattering of ashes. Perhaps you’d prefer a gathering in a local hall, club or event centre, by the bushland, lake or ocean – Picaluna can assist you in finding the right way to honour your person.

We strive to deliver the best possible experience every time. We work closely in partnership with families to co-create meaningful cremations, burials, memorials, home vigils and funeral ceremonies. We can help with outside funeral services, funeral wake venues, planning a memorial service, a scattering ashes ceremony, or a range of non-traditional funeral services.

It’s important to note that in a rapidly changing world, we’re ready with whatever you need. That can be anything from revolutionary cardboard coffins to the latest in funeral live-streaming technology.
