Neil Finn, who once said the song was about offering oneself up as a sort of \u201cweeping wall\u201d to take on another\u2019s sadness, sent a message for Iain\u2019s family, saying he was \u201cmoved to think there might be some comfort and warmth gained from that song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-1gm2i\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">It was a nod to the twin personalities of the gentle Scot. Iain Shedden loved music. He played it, he lived it and wrote about it. Above all, however, he loved his family. Here, at the finale, the two passions merged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-ebfmk\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">When Molly Shedden, now 18, was younger her dad took her to all the concerts. The Wiggles, Hi-5, Hilary Duff. One Direction. But it was last year, watching Crowded House on the steps of the Sydney Opera House with her father, that stood out. \u201cIt was so incredibly special to be there with dad,\u201d Molly told the crowd at the Marrickville Town Hall where Sheddy was farewelled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-7i5sh\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to brag but my dad was probably the coolest dad ever. I couldn\u2019t have asked for a better man to teach me about love, about how we should be loved. I am so lucky to have had a dad who respected women.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-1r5s7\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">There is a story, a few years back, when Iain\u2019s wife Christine Nestel was fighting cancer. The family went on holidays together and there, after chemotherapy, Sheddy sat his wife down and shaved her head. \u201cHe was so gentle,\u201d Molly said. \u201cAnd when he was done he couldn\u2019t stop gushing about how beautiful she was.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-3muv2\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">These stories were not just reserved for the family. One of his longest friends, Jimmy Doak \u2014 with whom Sheddy formed their first band The Jolt \u2014 said Sheddy \u201cwas a constant source of light in my life and I don\u2019t believe his passing diminishes that light.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-8juhh\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Monica McMahon told of being discovered by Iain Shedden and forming another band \u2014 a country rock one \u2014 called the Stepfords. Sheddy helped her with her dyslexia and now she is studying a Master of Creative Writing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-3tp7d\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Music promoter Michael Chugg said Iain was \u201cso important to the Australian music industry\u201d and rocker Jimmy Barnes put it simply: \u201cHe was a good man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2511\" src=\"https:\/\/v2.picaluna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Iain_Shedden_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.picaluna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Iain_Shedden_1.jpg 780w, https:\/\/www.picaluna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Iain_Shedden_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.picaluna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Iain_Shedden_1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-cqu79\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">The Australian\u2019s Stephen Fitzpatrick said Sheddy couldn\u2019t even bring himself to speak disparagingly of a bad meal in the old days of Surry Hills. \u201cHe had only been able to praise the food served up by describing a portion of lasagne as \u2018the warmest I\u2019ve ever eaten\u2019,\u201d he said. And there was that raised eyebrow, which always said so much more than the linguistically economical Scot was willing to put into words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-pleb\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Dog Trumpet, a band with whom Sheddy played the drums, performed at the service in Marrickville on Thursday and Iain\u2019s son Conor, 16, helped carry the coffin from the hall to the lilt of James Jeffrey on bagpipes, playing \u201cSleep Dearie Sleep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-elcm8\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Christine Nestel spoke briefly and, in her grief, offered \u201cmy heartfelt condolences to you all.\u201d It was a typical gesture of love for other people from the depths of their own sadness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"viewer-34mor\" class=\"mm8Nw _1j-51 _1atvN _1FoOD _3M0Fe _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"_2PHJq public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Through the service, Sheddy\u2019s beloved drum kit sat uncharacteristically silent on the stage.
